12/4/22 – Mauna Loa volcano (Hawai’i) eruption update: lava flows slowly advance towards Saddle Road

“The eruption continues without significant changes. Only fissure 3 is active and feeds the lava flow advancing northwards towards the Saddle Road, from where its most advanced front was approx. 2.3 miles (44 km) away last evening. Although eruption rates remain high, the flat ground is likely to slow down the progress of the flow.

During the past 24 hours, the lava flow advanced at an average rate of about 40 feet per hour (13 meters per hour), the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) reported.”

“Arctic sea ice extent was 10.31 million km² on December 4, 2022. At this time of year, extent was smaller only in two years, i.e. in 2016 and 2020, both strong El Niño years. With the next El Niño, Arctic sea ice extent looks set to reach record lows.”
