8/20/20 – Here’s another great Science Talk video from Jim Massa. In this video he talks about algae being found growing on the surface of the ice and snow in the Antarctic. He covers two articles from Nature Communication on the algae and rising temperatures in the Antarctic. Apparently, the Antarctic has already risen 3C past pre-industrial readings. So they are seeing rapid melting of the glaciers around the continent and the algae growing on the surface, setting up another self-reinforcing feedback loop. Here’s an article from National Geographic which also presents the information with great pictures.
Algae is turning coastal Antarctica red and green – and it could have big implications.

Beckwith discusses exactly what we’ve been seeing on a daily basis – the Arctic sea ice is not compressed or concentrated any more. It’s more like a bunch of ice cubes floating around. He discusses the rapid loss of ice, especially in the thickness or volume. He also talks about Greenland and the recent death of Konrad Steffen.

8/31/20 – Giant new 50-metre deep ‘crater’ opens up in Arctic tundra
This is showing up in the news in different places. Here is the report from the Siberian Times. Apparently, the hole was discovered sometime in July 2020 on the Yamal Peninsula. We don’t know exactly when it was formed. The scientists believe it to be from methane release as a result of melting permafrost. I’ll go over this in my show today.
